Rebar is a metal bar used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension. Because of its unusual ribbed look and low cost, many people utilize it for aesthetic purposes.

Rebar is not typically visible in concrete structures because it is usually buried within the concrete structure. It is almost always made of steel because steel has thermal expansion properties like concrete which reduces temperature change issues.
